Founder - Surya Agrotek

Mr.K.Ajay, Director of Surya Agrotek, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala is a Botany Graduate from the University of Kerala. He worked as a Technical Officer at Jawaharlal Nehru Tropical Botanic Garden and Research Institute, a state funded research and development organization (JNTBGRI) from 1995-2005 in various mushroom projects and later started a mushroom farm of his own during 2005. He gained expertise in mushroom culture and spawn development, cultivation and value addition from JNTBGRI which in turned out to become a self enterprise. During 2012 he was succeeded in obtaining a programme from State Horticulture Mission (SHM), Department of Agriculture, Govt of Kerala,  through he could upgrade his Mushroom lab and farm with all infrastructures to the present state. State of the art technology, commitment, to produce quality product and a personal approach have made Surya  Agrotek one of the largest producer and supplier of quality mushroom spawn in the state. . It is one of the  PFTS (Farmers practical field training school) under RATTC (Regional Agricultural Technology Training Centre) Department of Agricultutre, Kazhakuttom, Thiruvananthapuram, for  providing field demonstrations, trainings for value addition etc. 

In addition to the supply of spawn and mushroom, he also extend his expertise to establish mushroom cultivation units, impart training in mushroom cultivation and value addition. He is producing both oyster and milky spawn. He was able to attract several awards from his dedicated activities which are indicative of his contribution to this field. 

Considering the outstanding contribution to the Mushroom farming, Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR)-Directorate of Mushroom Research (DMR), Solan, awarded “The Progressive Mushroom Grower Award-2017” organized 20th National Mushroom Mela on 10th September 2017 at ICAR-DMR Campus, Solan, Himachal Pradesh.   

 

 Several unemployed youths adopted mushroom farming as a means of income generation by obtaining training from him and he extends all service back-ups for them. His success story and activities were published through various Medias and also covered by leading news channels. 

Surya Agrotek is engaged in the Mushroom industry by way of:- 

  • Mushroom culture development & spawn production( Oyster & Milky) 
  • Mushroom cultivation and post harvest technology. 
  • Human resource development through mushroom cultivation & related aspects. 
  • Regularly conducting training programmes in relation with mushroom cultivation & Value addition in Agriculture offices, Colleges, Schools, Grama Panchayaths, individual farmers, Farmer Interest Groups, Residence Associations,  SHGs, NGOs etc. 
  •  Assisting interested groups /individuals in establishing mushroom cultivation & processing units 
  • Creating awareness among people regarding the nutritious & medicinal values of mushrooms 
  • Supplying good quality Spawn, Mushrooms & Mushroom Products. 
  • Training on value added products from mushrooms (Pickle, Cutlet, Soup, Pudding, Mushoom sweetball , Chilly mushroom, Mushroom fried rice etc.) 

 

                Achievements: 

  1. Award for the best Mushroom farmer from Kerala Agricultural University in relation with mushroom mela conducted on 4th march 2013 
  1. Second prize for the best individual innovator in relation with the 25th Kerala Science Congress-Sasthrajalakom National Science Expo held at Kanakakunnu palace, Thiruvananthapuram during January 28th to February 3rd 2013 
  1. Secured National award (Bharath Gaurav Award) for the outstanding performance in Mushroom Cultivation & Spawn Production from  Mushroom Growers Association of India, Solan– Himachal Pradesh in relation with Mushroom farmers meet conducted at Agriculture College , Vellayani, Thiruvananthsapurap on 01-02-2012 
  1. Award for the best Yuva Karshakan from Kerala Karshaka Sangam in relation with Karshaka Congress  
  1.  Secured First Prize in the recipe competition (exclusively with        Mushrooms) organized by Kerala Agricultural University and State Horticulture Mission, at Kanakakunnu Palace,Thiruvananthapuram as part of the “MUSHROOM FAIR”  from 17th to 18th March, 2010 
  1. Secured award for the outstanding performance in Mushroom Cultivation & Spawn Production during the year 2009-2010 from  Krishi Bhavan, Manickal Grama Panchayath in relation with Farmers day Celebrations. 
  1. Selected as Best Farmer of the Manickal Panchayath (2005-2006) (Manickal Krishi Bhavan area) by Krishi Bhavan, Manickal Panchayath, Department of Agriculture Govt. of Kerala in relation with Farmers day Celebrations. 
  1. Several Training programmes on Mushroom cultivation and related aspect conducted at Schools, Colleges, Bed colleges,  Panchayaths, Krishi Bhavans, Residence Associations, S.H.Gs, N.G.Os etc. at different localities of Kerala. 
  1. Established several spawn production laboratories, mushroom cultivation centers in different localities of Kerala. 

6) Conducted a survey among the Mushroom cultivators of Kerala as a   part of the Department of Biotechnology  project in JNTBGRI . 

7) Secured Second Prize in the recipe competition (exclusively with Mushrooms) organized by Tropical Botanic Garden and Research Institute, Trivandrum, Kerala as part of the “MUSHROOM FAIR”  from 14th to 16th February, 2006.

9) Life Member in  Mushroom Growers Association of India, Solan-    Himachal Pradesh. 

Now he is also working as a Public Relation  Officer –St. John’s Malankara Medical Village, Pirappancode, Thiruvananthapuram & Consultant of various Mushroom farms in Kerala. 

 

He is a member of Mushroom Growers Association of India, Kerala Agri-Horticultural Society &Y’s Men International organization.
